Our souls at night book club review8/15/2023 Agent: Joshua Bilmes, JABerwocky Literary. Our Souls at Night, Kent Haruf’s last novel before his death, is the story of two individuals, Addie More and Louis Waters, who begin sleeping together platonically for the benefit of each other’s shared company. The two are not that well acquainted with each other, however, Addie decides to ask for the somewhat unorthodox arrangement. Readers will root for Kris all the way to the explosive, poignant finale. Hendrix ( Horrorstör) scatters plenty of barbed popular and consumer culture references throughout this harrowing tale of redemption in the face of powerful evil. Undaunted, Kris unleashes her inner badass and her wicked guitar riffs to stop Terry and his evil cabal. OUR SOULS AT NIGHT Kent Haruf In the familiar setting of Holt, Colorado, home to all of Kent Haruf’s inimitable fiction, Addie Moore pays an unexpected visit to a neighbor, Louis Waters. Although, it’s easy to understand how it could be about sex: Redford is 81, Fonda is 79, and both of them still look better than most of us ever will. She has to ward off murderous UPS men, hellish creatures, and much more on her way to the culmination of Koffin’s tour: Hellstock ’19 in the Nevada desert, where Terry will bring thousands of souls together for the devil to harvest. This is a short book, only 179 pages, and it is Kent Harufs last book before he passed away and, of course, it takes place in Holt, Colorado. They both agree that nights are the worst. Kris, 47 and looking back at the shambles of her life, seeks the truth about the night Terry drew up contracts, striking a bargain with the devil that sold out Dürt Würk and doomed Kris to misery and obscurity while gaining fame and fortune for himself. Now Terry’s on an apocalyptic farewell tour with his new band, Koffin. Terry Hunt-aka the Blind King, the former frontman of the wildly successful Dürt Würk-ruined guitarist Kris Pulaski’s life 20 years ago. The letters BC denote books recommended for book clubs.Hendrix’s pulpy love letter to heavy metal music is a gloriously over-the-top scare fest that has hidden depths. I use the language of food to categorize books that I read and review: C C: Chinese Carryout (page-turners, great for plane rides), D: Dessert (delightful indulgences), DC: Diet Coke and Gummi Bears (young adult books), G: Gourmet (exquisite writing requiring concentration), GPR: Grandma’s Pot Roast (books that get your attention and stick with you), GS Grits, Southern Fried Chicken, and Pineapple Upside Down Cake (distinctly evocative of the American South), OC: Over Cooked (good ingredients, but overwritten), PP: Pigeon Pie (historical fiction, parts or all of the novel set at least 50 years ago), PBJ: Peanut Butter and Jelly (children’s books adults will like), R: Road Food (audio books for road trips), SBP: Sweet Bean Paste (international literature), SF: Soul Food (spirituality, theology, books for your soul), SN: Super Nutrition (lots of information, yet tasty as fresh blueberries), S: Sushi with Green Tea Sorbet (satire, irony, black humor, acquired taste), T: Tapas (small bites including short stories, essays, and poetry), D: Dessert (sheer delight). Among the several damaged families in this beautifully cadenced and understated tale is that of Tom Guthrie, a high-school history teacher in small Holt, Colorado, who’s left to raise his two young sons, Ike and Bobby, alone when his troubled wife first withdraws from them and then, without explanation, abandons them altogether.
